Each week the Springboks’ Chasing the Sun 2 documentary continues to reveal incredible insights into the team’s journey to World Cup glory last year.
This past Sunday night, the latest episode focused primarily on the tense semi-final against England, which required the Springboks to dig deep to overturn a nine-point deficit.
The Springboks eventually managed to change the match momentum through an incredible scrumming display, with Bongi Mbonambi playing an incredibly important role in this resurgence.
Mbonambi also had some big decisions to make as he took over the captaincy from Siya Kolisi for the majority of the second half.
After the match, an incredible clip from the documentary shows Mbonambi breaking down in tears after the emotionally draining knockout game that South Africa ultimately won by a single point.
As Mbonambi sits sobbing in the change room, coach Jacques Nienaber comes over to comfort the hooker, while he later also buries himself in the embrace of Rassie Erasmus.
The display of raw emotion reveals how much tension and emotion it took for the Springboks to emerge victorious, while it particularly resonates considering Mbonambi is known as the team’s ‘top dog’ as a result of his true grit and strength.
The Chasing the Sun documentary has undoubtedly got fans in the mood to see the Springboks, with the start of the 2024 season just around the corner.
In June, the Springboks will clash in a one-off fixture against Wales before facing Ireland and Portugal ahead of the Rugby Championship.
