Springboks alignment camp: Surprise call-ups and shock omissions

Rassie Erasmus has reportedly assembled a big group of players for the Springboks’ first alignment camp of the year and several uncapped players were included.

The Springboks have not officially been in action — in terms of squad assemblies — since the Rugby World Cup festivities last November. A

And between then and now, Rassie Erasmus has been unveiled as the head coach, while Tony Brown and Jerry Flannery join as the new assistant coaches.

Over the weekend, reports surfaced in local media that the Springbok management team had completed their first bit of business by extending invitations to various locally based players — capped and uncapped — for the first group gathering of the year.

Now, there’s been a host of players who have been performing at the peak of their powers in the United Rugby Championship (URC), but was form the only factor taken into account when the uncapped players for this alignment camp was selected?

Evidently not, because one of the best performing stars in in the URC overall, Hacjivah Dayimani, is said to have been bizarrely overlooked. There was also no room for capped Springboks Aphelele Fassi and Joseph Dweba.
