Springbok stars sign for struggling Sharks

The Sharks have boosted their squad significantly with the capture of two Springboks, who are set to join the Durban-based team’s ranks later this year.

In transfer news that was initially reported by Rapport newspaper and then confirmed RugbyPass this past weekend, the Sharks have succeeded in their quest to sign Springboks Andre Esterhuizen and Trevor Nyakane.

Their recruitment comes as a welcome addition to an already stacked, but misfiring Sharks squad and will undoubtedly help the Sharks launch a better bid for the title in next season’s URC than they are currently tabling in the current campaign.

Esterhuizen has previously played for the Sharks and will return to his old team to fill midfield spot left by the departure of Rohan Janse van Rensburg, who recently completed a short-term mid-season move to Canon Eagles after less than two seasons in Durban.

The 29-year-old centre, who started his professional career in Durban, was under contract with Harlequins until June 2025 and the Sharks have had to pay a significant fee – reported to be in the region of £500 000 (R11 million) – to get him released.

Meanwhile, it appears that the Sharks convinced Springbok prop Nyakane to turn down a return to the Bulls and instead take up a move to Durban.
