The South African website takes a look at what has happened to the heroic starting Springbok XV that memorable day at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, and here we pay tribute, hooker Chris Rossouw, who had fought some tough battles on and off the field.

CHRIS ROSSOUW (HOOKER)

Chris Rossouw played only NINE Tests for the Springboks between 1995 and 1999, but he achieved more in those nine international matches than most players do in a lifetime.

Before the 1995 final, Rossouw had four caps to his name, but the team’s first-choice hooker James Dalton’s suspension for the Rugby World Cup title-decider opened the door for him to start for the Springboks against the All Blacks.

In the years after the 1995 Rugby World Cup, Rossouw disappeared off the Springbok radar and it wasn’t until 1999 that he would add to his caps tally, with four more Test appearance for his country. He called time off his playing career in 2000.

Since then, Rossouw was diagnosed with lymphoma (a form of cancer that affects the immune system) after he had experienced discomfort in his back. A scan revealed a large lump near his stomach, which was pressurising his kidneys.

Six weeks after he started with chemotherapy, Rossouw’s tumour disappeared and he was cured of cancer.

His recovery motivated him to deliver messages of hope to other sufferers through the Lymphoma Awareness Campaign. Rossouw is now a farmer, and works in the family business, the Rossgro farm company.
