A new preview of the “Chasing the Sun 2” documentary offers a glimpse into the South African rugby team’s mindset regarding their renowned “Bomb Squad” strategy. This tactic, characterised by a bench stacked with forwards, propelled the Springboks to victory at the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup.

What is the Springboks’ “Bomb Squad”?

The term “Bomb Squad” originated during the 2019 World Cup when Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus and his coaches opted for a six-forward, two-back split on the bench. This unorthodox move proved incredibly effective as South Africa clinched the championship in Japan. The powerful strategy continues to define the Springboks to this day.

Ahead of the World Cup in France, Erasmus and his successor Jacques Nienaber pushed the tactic further. Indeed, they selected an astonishing seven forwards and one back for matches against New Zealand.

This bold strategy was repeated during the tournament, securing stunning back-to-back World Cup triumphs for the Boks after their victory over the All Blacks in the final.

A Source of Pride

The latest “Chasing the Sun 2” trailer focuses heavily on the Bomb Squad, with lock RG Snyman offering valuable insights. Snyman, who excelled off the bench in key World Cup matches, sheds light on the significance of the tactic for the Springboks:

“We take that role very seriously,” Snyman says in the clip. “It’s actually if a guy gets selected in the starting lineup off the bench, we say, ‘I’m sorry man, maybe next game you will be back in the Bomb Squad’,” he added with a chuckle.

The “Bomb Squad”: A Game-Changer

Duane Vermeulen emphasizes the impact of the Bomb Squad: “They don’t call it the Bomb Squad for nothing.” This likely references the pivotal role played by replacements such as Handre Pollard, Snyman, and Ox Nche in turning the tide of the semi-final against England.
