The world champion Springbok team are just over two months away from the start of an intense 2024 Test season.

When we look at key role players in the squad, it’s always interesting to highlight the value added by certain players who often don’t get the credit they deserve.

Springbok try assist king: Willie le Roux

There are very few Springbok players who have played as consistently over the last decade than Willie le Roux.

Since making his debut in 2013, the veteran fullback has racked up 93 Test caps, and is almost certain to become the next Springbok centurion this year.

For one reason or another, Le Roux has generally seemed to divide opinion when it comes to the opinion of Springbok supporters, who often question his full value to the team.

What shouldn’t be overlooked, however, is the fact that the 34-year-old is arguably one of the most creative Bok players, boasting a unique ability to read the game.

Within the inner circle of the Springbok team, he is deeply respected as a ‘try assist king’, often creating tries and moments of glory for his teammates through his distribution and decision-making.

Even as Le Roux shifted into a new ‘bomb squad’ role for the majority of last season, he continued to play a crucial role off the bench, with his experience and versatility setting him apart as one of the most unique Test players.

There is no doubt that Le Roux will continue to have a key role to play for the Springboks this year despite the fact that he is potentially heading into the twilight of his international career.
