Nienaber will step down from the role as soon as the Springboks either defend their title – or are eliminated from the tournament.

So Nienaber may well fight to live another day.

It was reported in April this year that Nienaber, who will turn 51 the day after Sunday’s match, will join Irish giants Leinster following the Springboks’ participation at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
