Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok lock RG Snyman has agreed terms to join Leinster next season.

Snyman will complete his contract with Munster at the end of the current season, although it remains unclear when he will return from injury.

How much will RG Snyman get paid to turn out for Leinster?

With a R10 million offer on the table from Premiership side Bath, Snyman was eager to see that matched or bettered.

Leinster were willing to put Snyman into their top earners bracket in order to secure his services.

Snyman has signed a one-year contract. It contains performance-related clauses with the number of matches played determining how much he will be paid.

He will receive a base salary of €500 000 (roughly R10 million) across the single season of his deal.

Staying in Ireland

Snyman, whose wife Saskia works in Dublin, wanted to stay in Ireland having put down some roots in the country.

“Having settled really well in Limerick since our arrival in Ireland almost four years ago, my wife and I want to stay on in Ireland if possible,” he said,” RG Snyman said.

“Continuing with Munster beyond June of 2024 was no longer a choice I could exercise. I will continue to give my absolute all and best for Munster, on and off the field, until the end of the season.”

“After careful consideration of all offers presented, the Leinster opportunity was the one I decided on.

“It is an invitation that allows me to continue to stay part of a world-class high-performance rugby set-up. It also enables my wife and I to stay in Ireland.

“I am a professional rugby player. I need to work very hard to see to it that I add value to any system that trusts me enough to improve its cause.

“At Leinster, I will continue to be challenged to my utmost limit to improve my game and hopefully contribute to improve the club.

“That will be my only job and I intend to do everything to achieve this at the highest level of performance.

“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to work under Jacques Nienaber again. I want to thank Leinster for making it possible.”

Workload clause

RG Snyman will join Leinster from Munster next season, but will do so with a specific condition in his contract.

It seems the Springbok had a workload clause included.

“The South Africa lock will make the move across Ireland ahead of next season on a one-year deal, arriving with a clause in his contract stating he will only be able to play a certain percentage of United Rugby Championship and Investec Champions Cup games for the province per season,” Rugby pass report.

The agreement is in place , firstly to guarantee that Leinster’s current generation of locks does not stagnate. Not only is captain James Ryan a second-rower, but Leinster also has several Ireland or potential international locks on their roster. Ryan Baird, 24, and Joe McCarthy, 22, are both Leinster regulars and Ireland internationals, and with their academy products also emerging, the arrangement will ensure Snyman does not deprive the players of game time.
