Did Rassie Erasmus pour cold water on Hacjivah Dayimani’s Springbok dream?

Rassie Erasmus has revealed the reasoning behind the omission of Hacjivah Dayimani from the Springboks alignment camp.

The Stormers loose forward’s non-selection for the first alignment camp of the season raised questions to which Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus has now provided answers.

Dayimani has been South Africa’s standout performer in the URC this season, spearheading the Stormers’ campaign with one Man of the Match performance after another.

And it was those red hot displays that put him in the conversation for Springbok selection. However, when Rassie Erasmus’ extended squad was announced, Dayimani’s name was one of the glaring absentees from the list.

Aggrieved by his omission from the 43-man squad invited to the Springbok alignment camp earlier this month, Dayimani has now decided to take up one of the contract deals tabled to him by clubs from Japan and France.

Speaking to Rugby365com earlier this week, Rassie Erasmus hinted that the 26-year-old doesn’t yet have the complete skillset needed to be a Springbok loose forward and thus doesn’t tick enough boxes to earn selection.

“We certainly looked at Hacjivah,” said Erasmus. “When we looked at his roadmap, and I am not talking specifically about him, I am talking about other loose forwards competing with other loose forwards and how many battles you get into and how many battles you win.

“If you look at hookers and you look at how many tries they scored then all of them should be Springboks. They are at the back of a maul and they score eight tries.

“We look at your workrate and your understanding. When you make a tackle, do you dominate that tackle?”

“If Cheslin was just stepping guys, we would never pick Cheslin. But Cheslin is tackling guys, he is stealing balls, he is going up for the high ball, so he is a complete player,” Rassie Erasmus explained.

“I am not talking about Hacjivah specifically, but there are a lot of players that are really good, but they are not complete.

“Hacjivah is not out of the mix in terms of playing a Test match this year. There is always a possibility.”
