But who will be the man – or woman – entrusted with the TMO role?

TMOs have sadly once again come in for widespread criticism during the tournament for their interference in matches.

The last thing any rugby fan will want to see is a match at the business end of the spectacle decided by a controversial off-field decision.

World Rugby named seven television match officials (TMOs) for the tournament.

They are: Brett Cronan (Australia), Tom Foley (England), Marius Jonker (South Africa), Brian MacNeice (Ireland), Joy Neville (Ireland), Brendon Pickerill (New Zealand), Ben Whitehouse (Wales).

South Africa’s Marius Jonker is not an option, leaving six to choose from.

There are no French TMOs at the tournament.
