Ruan Pienaar, the legendary Springbok scrumhalf, has started a new chapter in his rugby career. The Cheetahs confirmed that Pienaar will join the Free State U/21 team and the academy as the backline and attack coach.

“I am excited about the new role and look forward to the challenge and learning,” Pienaar said enthusiastically.

Pienaar Meets with U/21 Players, Prepares for Upcoming Series

On Wednesday, Pienaar met with the young players for the first time. He will join their team drills next week as they gear up for the South African Rugby Union’s U/21 series.

The series begins on the first weekend of next month, with the Free Staters facing the Lions at Ellis Park in their opening match.

The union stated that Pienaar will act as a bridge between the junior and senior teams. His main goal will be to develop the next generation of senior players and prepare them for higher-level competition.

“We need continuity between the teams,” emphasized MJ Smith, the chief operating officer of the Free State Cheetahs (Pty) Ltd. “Ruan brings a wealth of experience. We’re lucky to have him in our camp.”

Pienaar to Enhance Skills Across Cheetahs’ Teams

In addition to his work with the U/21 team, Pienaar will contribute to all the professional teams within the Cheetahs’ organization.

He will focus on honing the specific skills required for the Cheetahs’ playing style.

Pienaar’s Final Matches as a Player

Despite his new coaching duties, Pienaar will continue to play for the Cheetahs in the SA Cup series. He is likely to play two more matches, with his final game expected to be against Griquas on May 17 at Shimla Park.

This venue holds special memories for Pienaar, as it is where he played for Kovsies’ youth teams after finishing school.

A Glittering Playing Career

Pienaar’s playing career is truly remarkable. He represented the Springboks in 88 Tests, with his final international match being against Argentina in the 2015 World Cup in London.

Before his Springbok debut, Pienaar was a provincial player with the Sharks for over a decade.

Following in His Father’s Footsteps

Ruan Pienaar is not the first in his family to transition from playing to coaching. His father, Gysie Pienaar, also became a coach after his playing days with the Free State.

Gysie was part of the Springboks’ coaching staff when they won the 1995 World Cup on home soil. Later, he assisted the Free State team.

As Ruan Pienaar embarks on this new challenge, his vast experience and knowledge of the game are set to greatly benefit the young talent in the Free State region.

His involvement with the U/21 team and the academy signals the start of an exciting new chapter in his rugby journey.
