The troublesome playing surface at Cape Town Stadium has been an issue during Stormers’ matches for the majority of the time since the team moved away from Newlands, and it tore up badly during this past season as they once again progressed to the URC final.

The state of the pitch has been a big talking point as large chunks of turf have been cut up as the campaigns have progressed, but the issue was exacerbated this year after a Monster Jam event took place at the venue before the URC playoffs.

The situation is set to improve though as a new hybrid pitch, which is 50% synthetic and 50% grass, has now been successfully laid down ahead of the 2023-24 season..

This weekend’s iKapa Derby between PSL clubs Cape Town City and Cape Town Spurs will mark the reopening of the stadium which has been closed for the installation of the turf since July.

The Stormers’ first home of the new season is against Welsh outfit Scarlets on 28 October in the URC.

Earlier this year, the Stormers posted a video showing the progress being made at the stadium.
