According to Netwerk24, Coetzee was reportedly kidnapped by the Paraguayan People’s Army, a so-called Marxist-Leninist guerrilla group that are allegedly responsible for a series of kidnappings and crimes in the country.

Coetzee’s family was informed on Sunday about the kidnapping, which apparently took place when Danie and his wife Martie went for a walk on their farm. He had apparently taken a longer route and walked ahead.

It’s reported that Coetzee later phoned to state that he was being held at gunpoint by two men who were demanding $300,000 (R5.4-million). Since then it’s said there has been no further contact.

Coetzee’s daughter from a first marriage, Suzette, is married to Human, who was appointed by SA Rugby as the new Springbok scrum coach at the start of 2020.
