Did Evan Roos bravely play through injury for Springboks?

Evan Roos may have played through the pain of a serious rib injury as he sought to help the Springboks’ cause against England on Saturday.

This past weekend Evan Roos produced a solid performance as he made his second start for the Springboks at No 8, coming in for the unavailable Jasper Wiese.

It’s now interestingly emerged that the Stormers star may have suffered a serious rib injury early on, but found the strength to push through until the 53rd minute when he was eventually replaced.

The Springboks have now returned to South Africa, with Stormers’ forwards coach Rito Hlungwani confirming they will need to wait on the injury assessment for Roos, who may have even broken a rib.

“Our doctor informed us about Evan Roos,” Hlungwani said. “He’s going to go for scans as soon as he lands and then we’ll have the diagnosis and feedback. We’re not sure if it’s broken or not. Once we hear from our specialist, we’ll be able to give the correct information.”

REPORT: NIENABER, ERASMUS ASSURED OF SPRINGBOKS JOB SECURITY

Saturday’s result saw the Springboks earn their first win over England at Twickenham since 2014 as they registered a rewarding 27-13 victory to end their tour on a considerable high.

The result saw the Boks win two of their four matches on the Outgoing Tour – with the two narrow defeats being against the first and second ranked teams in the world in Ireland and France.

“We’ve had a couple of special results as a team, but this was the first win for Siya and I at Twickenham, so it’s very special to us,” said coach Jacques Nienaber. “The forwards were outstanding and created a good platform for our backs to attack, so all-in-all, it was a fantastic team effort.”

THE SPRINGBOKS ENDED THE YEAR FOURTH IN THE WORLD RANKINGS

Nienaber was delighted with the way some of the young players rose to the occasion.

“With this match being outside of the international Test window there were a whole lot of players who were not available for selection, but we have a lot of players knocking on the door and it was great to give those guys an opportunity tonight.

“It’s always good to give those players a chance under such pressure in front of a packed Twickenham, which can be pretty hostile, and they stood up today.”

SOUTH AFRICA ARE ONE OF THE FAVOURITES FOR THE WORLD CUP
