South Africa have reached the final of the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan after snatching a nerve-shredding victory over Wales in Yokohama on Sunday.

The Springboks will face England in next Saturday’s final, with Eddie Jones’ men storming to victory over reigning champions New Zealand on Saturday at the same venue.

The second semi-final was in stark contrast to the first that saw the All Blacks exit, with kicking the order of the day as expected from both teams.

It was cagey from the off, as both sides trained their sights on forcing an error rather than creating something of their own.

Penalties were traded between the trusty boots of Handre Pollard and Dan Biggar, with South Africa taking a tender, 9-6 lead into the half time break.

Tender, too, were Welsh duo Tomas Francis and George North.

Neither survived as far as the break with the prop dislocating a shoulder in heavy contact with Duane Vermeulen and the experienced wing pulling a hamstring.

It was a grim watch but the Boks finally snaffled the opening try just before the hour mark.

Damian de Allende produced an elusive run to finish after Pollard had opened up space in the Welsh defence with a darting charge of his own.

The sunny uplands of a seven-point lead weren’t to last, though, as Wales churned away at the green line for 15 phases before winning the penalty.

Skipper Alun Wyn Jones boldly opted for the scrum and it paid off, as they broke snappily to the left where wing Josh Adams dived into the corner.

Leigh Halfpenny took over kicking duties from the departed Biggar and slotted his first to restore parity inside the final quarter.

But Pollard had one more left in his locker after Wales came in at the side to concede a pivotal penalty.

The ex-Bulls fly-half kept his cool and bisected the uprights with three minutes left to play and hearts pounding.
