On this day in South African sports history, a pair of long jumpers achieved a unique athletic feat in London and there were Springboks wins and losses.
There have been plenty of sporting heartbreaks on this day in history, especially for South African golfers.
On this day in SA sport – 5 August
1961 – The Springboks beat the Wallabies 28-3 in the first test at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. John Gainsford scores SA’s 200th test try in the second half.
1965 – A superb 125 from Graeme Pollock set South Africa on the way to winning the Trent Bridge Test against England and eventually the series – their last in the United Kingdom for 29 years.
1999 – The SA racehorse, Horse Chestnut, is flown to New York by special cargo aeroplane to run in the Dubai World Cup with R30 million prize-money.
2006 – The Wallabies earned a narrow 20-18 win over the Springboks in a Tri-Nations match at the Telstra Stadium in Sydney. The win saw Australia regain the Nelson Mandela Challenge Plate. The All Blacks were runaway winners of the Tri-Nations Championship.
2007 – Liezl Huber of South Africa wins the Acura Classic Women’s doubles with Cara Black of Zimbabwe in Carlsbad, California. They defeated Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Anna Chakvetadze of Russia in the final.
2007 – Rory Sabbatini finished tied second at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational that was contested at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Tiger Woods won the event by eight strokes.
2014 – SA’s Springbok Women lose 55-3 to France at the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Marcoussis.
2015 – Chad Le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh win Silver medals at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia. Le Clos placed second in the 200m Butterfly Final while van der Burgh finished behind Briton Adam Peaty in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke Final.
2017 – Luvo Manyonga wins Gold at the IAAF World Championships in London in the Long Jump, compatriot Ruswahl Samaai wins the Bronze in the same event.
