A new-look SPAR Proteas team was selected for the SPAR Challenge Tri-Nations at a training camp held in Stellenbosch last week due to the absence of several of South Africa’s star players.

South Africa originally had a team selected in December for this tournament, however, COVID-19 restrictions have prevented South Africa’s netball players playing league netball in Australia and the United Kingdom to return to South Africa for this tournament.

Head coach Dorette Badenhorst said this will provide opportunities for rising stars and give some indication of the depth of talent in South Africa.

“The biggest challenge has been in the circle, because the overseas players are mainly shooters and defenders. But it has been exciting to try out new circle combinations and I am very happy with the progress we have made. The new members of the team are being helped by the experienced squad members and we had an excellent training camp,” said Badenhorst.

Referring to the SPAR Proteas and The President’s XII, Mpumi Javu, Director of Selections said,

“I have full confidence in the teams that have been put together by both coaches and I know for sure that they are not going to Cape Town just to add numbers, but they are going there to compete and make sure that they get the best out of our players”.
