In doing so, Du Plessis made history by becoming the first South African UFC title holder.
Du Plessis was awarded the fight 48-47 on two of the three judges’ scorecards, with the third judge giving the edge to Strickland by a similar margin.

The fight got under way around 01:00 local time.
Once the new champion was done with the official post-event press conference and numerous interviews, it was time for breakfast – South African style!

Du Plessis took to Instagram to write: “History has been made. This is Africa we fear nothing and certainly no one!! Thank you South Africa, it’s an honor representing our beautiful nation.”
Du Plessis and Strickland were both awarded $50 000 (R930 000) bonuses after their bout was named ‘Fight of the Night’.
