Far be it from us to pretend we’ve never made a mistake. In fact, chances are if you read through this copy, you’ll spot a typo.

But during Wednesday night’s PSL matches, it was Virgil Vries from Kaizer Chiefs who got things wrong.

Cape Town City claimed a ‘smash and grab’ 1-0 win (Benni McCarthy’s words, not ours) over Amakhosi in Soweto and it was Vries, who was at fault for the decisive goal in his side’s loss to Mamelodi Sundowns earlier in the month, who’ll be kicking himself. Or maybe he’ll doing some goal kicks.

Dove Edmilson capitalised on the error from the ‘keeper and netted the only goal with just over 10 minutes of regulation time to play. The result sees the Citizens remain in fourth place, but they now enjoy a three-point lead over fifth-placed Chiefs.

City suffered an early injury blow, with striker Siphelele Mthembu taking a knock to his ankle in a challenge with Teenage Hadebe. The attacker looked to run the problem off, but was replaced on nine minutes by Kermit Erasmus.

Chiefs enjoyed the better chances in the opening quarter, with Daniel Cardoso heading just wide from a free kick in the seventh minute, while the midway point of the half saw Bernard Parker send a deflected effort on goal, only for Peter Leeuwenburgh to make a good save.

The first half ended goalless, but the Citizens claimed the lead out of nowhere in the 79th minute. Vries came off his line and flapped at a free kick delivered from the visitors’ right flank, allowing Edmilson to score from close range.

McCarthy’s charges were reduced to ten men with not long left on the clock. Defender Zukile Kewuti was deservedly shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Ntshangase.

The win puts Cape Town City fourth on the PSL log, just four points behind leaders Wits.
