Switzerland’s Mauro Schmid, riding for South African-registered UCI WorldTour team Qhubeka-Assos, has won a brutal Stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia.

The 21-year-old beat Alessandro Covi (UAE Team Emirates) in a two-man sprint finish at the end of the 162km stage from Perugia to Montalcino.
Colombia’s Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) held onto his overall lead and is now 45 seconds ahead of Russia’s Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana-Premier Tech).
