Dutch rookie Wout van Aert won stage 10 of the Tour de France on Monday as Julian Alaphilippe extended his overall lead after a blistering late charge split the peloton.

Yellow jersey Alaphilippe started the attack from 20km out and defending champion Geraint Thomas and his Ineos team joined in to leave at least four of their rivals trailing home 1min 36 adrift at the finish in Albi.

Stage 9 in summary

South Africa’s Daryl Impey rode to a famous win on Stage 9 of the 2019 Tour de France.

The national champion rained on the Bastille Day parade, becoming the first South African in over a decade to win a Stage on the tour. He’s worn the yellow jersey before, but the stage win has long eluded him. You can relive Impey’s impressive ride here.

The home fans had to settle for yellow on their national day.

Julian Alaphilippe kept hold of the jersey, and Lance Armstrong had some interesting thoughts about why the Frenchman fetched his own water bottles on Stage 8.

Impey, wearing his national champion jersey, was part of a mass breakaway that quickly opened a 10-minute gap and extended it throughout the race with the pack eventually trailing in 16 minutes after Impey had beaten Belgian Tiesj Benoot to the line.

Defending champion Geraint Thomas and the other overall title contenders finished together in a low-key finale to the 170km rolling run.

Latest crash report

Crashes at the Tour de France are a fairly common sight. On Sunday’s stage, Italian cyclist Alessandro De Marchi crashed pretty badly. He abandoned the tour with a broken collar bone, broken ribs and facial lacerations, but he is recovering, as per the tour commentators. The scene of the crash was pretty horrific – clickthrough with caution.

Tour de France 2019: Stage 10

The good news? A rest day beckons. Bad news? We’re in for another hellish stage in the hills. Some more good news is that it ends on a fairly flat run, but only after a category four and three category three climbs. Merde!

Distance: 217,5km
Profile: A tricky stage for the peloton to control ahead of the first rest day.

Prediction

Look, we know nothing. We’ve warned you several times over. So we might as well throw caution into the wind and say that Impey will win another stage, because why not? It’s been that sort of tour.
