Proteas captain: De Kock will have a point to prove

Proteas limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma is excited to see the response from Quinton de Kock as he returns to the national team.

De Kock was made South Africa’s white-ball captain in February 2020, but that now seems like a lifetime ago. Since then, Bavuma has taken over as the captain for white-ball cricket, while De Kock sensationally announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year.

The Proteas responded superbly in De Kock’s absence to claim a memorable 2-1 series win over India, but they will now welcome the wicket keeper-batsman back into the ODI team for the series starting on Wednesday at 10:30.

The series marks De Kock’s return to action for the first time since becoming the father of a baby daughter, and South Africa will be hoping for a return to the free-flowing, motivated batsman who hit three centuries in successive matches against India eight seasons ago.

“It’s good to see Quinny again, we obviously missed him as the Test team. He has made a decision and it’s one that we respect,” Bavuma told reporters ahead of the opening ODI in Paarl on Wednesday.

“Having Quinny within the team has been good. I don’t want to put words in his mouth but knowing him, he’ll have a point to prove.”
