Petersen’s performances saw him named Player of the Series and also ICC Player of the Month.

His clutch innings were integral in steering South Africa to a Test series win over Virat Kohli’s men.

Petersen was the leading scorer in the series from either side with 276 runs, helping South Africa to a 2-1 series win over India, in a result that had the air of an upset.

A proven run-scorer in First-Class cricket; Petersen has amassed over 6000 runs in his travels around the franchise and provincial circuits.

He sports 16 centuries and 32 fifties in First-Class cricket, including a highest score of 225*.

The 28-year-old scored 111 for South Africa A against England in 2019 facing a bowling attack that included James Anderson, Chris Woakes and Durham’s own Ben Stokes.

Readying to face England

Petersen will be available for seven County Championship games. Afterwards will join up with the South Africa squad following Durham’s County Championship match against Worcestershire.

Keegan Petersen said: “It’s exciting to join a County like Durham and I look forward to linking up with the squad and having a successful contribution during my time in the north east.”
