Having sat out the midweek PSL action, this season’s two cup winners, Cape Town City and Baroka resume rivalries on Saturday, as they square off at Cape Town Stadium.
The Citizens claimed their second piece of silverware in October by bagging the MTN8 – beating Supersport United on penalties – before Bakgakga took a similar route in the Telkom Knockout final when they prevailed over Orlando Pirates in the shootout to register their first cup title.
At stake this time around is a crucial three points, which could propel the hosts as high as third on the PSL log, while their opponents will be eyeing a move away from their precarious position of 14th place.
The two sides have once already this season, with Bakgakga emerging victorious at home in the second round of fixtures after the start of the current campaign.
A lot has changed since that 2-1 win for Baroka, who picked up just two more league victories, against Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United, the latter ringing up the rear in the league table.
What the teams are saying
While their season has stuttered along, City seem to have emerged from a similar situation and are on an upward trajectory, but have injury concerns, with new signing, Kermit Erasmus and talisman, Surprise Ralani either ruled out or in doubt for Saturday’s clash after picking up knocks in the 1-0 victory over Supersport United.
“A few players got injured in the last game,” coach Benni McCarthy said.
“Surprise got a hefty knock, so he is definitely out for Baroka and Free State Stars. Edmilson as well… he is out for both games.
“Erasmus is also 50-50, and it’s likely we won’t have him for Baroka. We don’t want to risk him and make the injury worse.”
