Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is one of the world’s most famous food brands, and certainly one that South Africans love for their food fix on a daily basis – but have you ever thought why employees at the store stop to ask their customers to Add Hope?

Add Hope is an initiative that feeds back into the community, providing meals and outreach to local projects.

It’s part of community outreach, and one of the things that makes meals in South Africa something that makes a difference.

Here’s why the Add Hope initiative exists, and why customers are asked if they want to add a R2 donation to their meal.

KFC: Why adding HOPE to your meal matters

According to the KFC website, the Add Hope initiative exists to provide meals to millions of communities who are in need of the help.

While government resources like SASSA exist to ease the responsibility of daily life, there are still many families and communities who don’t have access to the most essential resources – or the most basic meals.

When you’re asked to add hope and agree, your donation goes towards projects funded and sponsored by KFC – which means that someone, somewhere gets a meal that they didn’t have.

KFC: More than 30 million meals every year

If you aren’t sure what difference to make with your change, then your R2 can be added to the difference made by the company.

According to their website, more than 30 million meals are provided every year as part of supporting this intiative – which can be as simple as saying yes when asked.

Adding hope could be one of the small ways to make a difference to communities, making sure that someone eats.

Fried chicken has become associated with Christmas in Japan, where the characteristic red logo has become synonymous with Santa Claus – and family get-togethers over chicken.
