The corruption trial for former President Jacob Zuma is still struggling to get out of the starting blocks on Tuesday, after more hurdles were placed in the way of progress. However, it soon transpired that Correctional Services boss Arthur Fraser – instrumental in securing medical parole for Msholozi – had been summoned to appear.

Arthur Fraser’s appearance sparks confusion

Fraser rocked up for court early on Tuesday, escorted by his legal entourage. He is also being represented by Musi Sikhakhane, who has previously defended Jacob Zuma in some of his courtroom battles. However, it seemed communication between uBaba’s allies was lacking, and Defence Advocate Dali Mpofu was left bewildered.

“I don’t understand why Arthur Fraser has been subpoenaed to court because Jacob Zuma’s medical parole has nothing to do with today’s proceedings. This is an abuse of the courts.”

Why is Arthur Fraser at the Zuma trial?

It’s a fair point, but one we may have already answered: Arthur Fraser’s decision to grant medical parole to Zuma has come under intense scrutiny, not least because he seemed to override several established processes. The ailments plaguing the 79-year-old have remained secret, making it difficult for judicial officials to assess his condition.

The ruling sent shockwaves across South Africa – and it has led the NPA to issue a subpoena for the former SSA chief.

Zuma trial latest: Only recusal bid will be heards today

KZN Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo issued a statement on the matter, aiming to clarify the confusion. According to him, Arthur Fraser will be compelled to ‘share information’ about Zuma’s medical issues.

“Arthur Fraser was subpoenaed by the NPA to attend court today. There are many areas of interest involved, but what I can say is that it relates to the details of medical records belonging to Jacob Zuma. Yes, he was granted medical parole, but he remains in hospital. The subpoena is to secure information relating to that.” | Singabakho Nxumalo

  • On Tuesday, Justice Koen ruled that only the application for the recusal of Advocate Billy Downer can proceed. Arthur Fraser has since been excused, and will only return at a later date.
