Wits University has decided on mandatory vaccination from all students and staff, come the start of the 2022 academic in two months, the announcement was made on Friday.

Is Wits the first university to make this choice? Nope. UCT made the decision in October.

So what is Wits’ own reasoning? The leading higher education brand said its decision was motivated by a determination to allow for full student and staff engagements on a social level come 2022.

“As the university starts to facilitate more teaching, learning and interaction on campus as set out above and returns more students to residences, a mandatory vaccination policy will accordingly aid in protecting the health and safety of the university community..,” said the university in a statement.

“… and by extension, members of the public that come into contact with the university’s employees and students or otherwise participate in any university activity,”

The university did not forget those students and staff who may not be willing to accept mandatory vaccination.

It said the individuals have the right to object on constitutional grounds.

“Employees and students may elect not to be vaccinated on constitutional grounds through the exercise of their rights to privacy, bodily integrity, freedom of religion, freedom of belief, and/or freedom of opinion.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it is noted that these rights are not absolute and may be limited to give effect to this policy.”

Students and staff can only deny mandatory vaccination on medical, constitutional grounds, otherwise, they will be denied entry to the campus.

The same condition will be faced by those who fail to provide vaccination certificates.

“Contractors, consultants, service providers, and their personnel, and visitors who cannot be vaccinated on medical grounds, who elect not to be vaccinated on constitutional grounds, or who are unable to provide the university with proof of vaccination will not be permitted access to the university’s precincts,” said Wits.
