The Democratic Alliance (DA) has confirmed in a statement that its member of parliament (MP) Cameron MacKenzie is currently recovering from surgery after surviving a violent encounter with armed robbers.

Cameron MacKenzie survives armed robbery

According to DA’s chief whip Natasha Mazzone, MacKenzie was on his way to his home in Dainfern Square — an estate in Midrand, Johannesburg — on Tuesday evening, when he was accosted by armed robbers.

At this time, it is not clear what exactly transpired but Mazzone confirmed that MacKenzie was shot in his shoulder during the incident.

“We can report that senior MP Mr Mackenzie, was shot in the shoulder, and we are pleased to be able to let the public know that he is recovering well from surgery. We are offering him and his family support and love during this horrendous ordeal,” Mazzone revealed.

In Mazzone’s view, the attempted robbery on MacKenzie proves that “no one in South Africa is safe, and that crime affects us all”.

The DA chief whip challenged the South African Police Service (SAPS) to act swiftly in maintaining law and order in the country and bringing those responsible for the senseless crime on MacKenzie to justice.

“This act of senseless violence reminds us all that the fight against crime remains one of our top priorities. We must continue this fight on behalf of al South Africans to ensure that our country is made safe, our people no longer live in fear and that criminals are prosecuted and bought to book,” she added.

Speaking to Times Live, DA Gauteng leader John Moodey condemned the attack and called on the police to do their job. He did, however, express his gratitude towards the medical staff that managed to remove the bullet from the MP’s shoulder.

“We as a party are horrified and disgusted by the incident. We are pleased that his operation went successfully,” Moodey said.
