There were scenes of abject terror on the streets of Durban earlier, after parts of a building at the corner of Dr Yusuf Dadoo and Dr Goonam street collapsed in the CBD. The deadly incident sparked an immediate response, but there are fears that more people – and other parts of the structure – may be in imminent danger.
So far, one person has been confirmed as deceased. Several others were believed to be entrapped in the building, but many have since been pulled to safety. Emergency services are on the scene, and confirmed:

The building in question had an overhanging balcony above the ground. It’s been revealed by KZN Emergency Services spokesperson, Robert Mckenzie, that a section of this structure had collapsed, and unfortunately, the only reported fatality so far was crushed by the crumbling materials. It’s not yet been established what caused the balcony to ‘give way’.
Netcare 911 were the first responders at the scene and arrived just after 9:30 to weigh-up the situation. Police have cordoned off the area to the public, and several ambulances arrived to take patients to nearby hospitals.
