Hammarsdale: Two KZN cops shot dead in their vehicle

Two traffic officers for the eThekwini Metro Police division were both killed on Tuesday, after they were gunned down by a mystery assailant in Hammarsdale.

Two traffic officers based in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal were senselessly gunned down while driving to work on Tuesday morning. A hail of bullets ripped through the vehicle they had occupied, and the circumstances behind this chilling crime still remain a mystery.

It was earlier reported that the pair had been travelling to work when attackers opened fire on their vehicle. The alleged ambush took place around 6:00, under the cover of darkness. Metro Police spokesperson Parbhoo Sewpersad confirmed that the officers were part of the city’s law enforcement team

“The scene is active. We at the Metro police are shocked by what we have heard and seen and at this stage. It is unknown what the circumstances were. We cannot say whether it was a drive-by shooting. The SAPS and members of the Hawks are investigating and will be able to give us more info soon.”

Both men – aged 24 and 36 respectively – were declared dead at the scene, and there was nothing the first responders could do to help the victims. Hawks have been also called to assess the situation in Hammarsdale.

Attention now turns to hunting down the perpetrators, who made a speedy getaway from the crime scene. It’s yet to be confirmed if this was a drive-by shooting, and all ‘motivating factors’ are under consideration.
