When we form a habit, what actually happens to the brain?

In an ideal world, forming a healthy habit like exercising, or eating right, would be easy, sadly, that’s not always the case.

According to scientists, habits form because the brain is constantly looking for methods to make tasks require less effort.

The brain will seek to make almost any routine into a habit if left to its own devices. This is because our minds can ramp down more frequently because of habits.

This desire to conserve effort is a significant benefit.

Have you ever considered what transpires in our brains when a choice becomes a habitual trait? I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds it frustrating when they try to form a new habit, but after a few days, they forget about it.

People are creatures of habit, and the behaviours they exhibit are the behaviours they want to exhibit, therefore changing a person’s behaviour can be challenging.

Due to the nature of habits, they can ensure that newly desired behaviours will be practiced consistently and not abandoned.

However, establishing new habits takes time and requires meeting a specific set of requirements.

The basal ganglia, a region of the brain that suggests numerous rewards when performance settings are constant, is said to be affected by the development of a new habit, according to a journal entry on “The art of forming habits.”

As a result, changing habits requires changing beliefs, perceptions, and cognitive strategies.

In other words, when positive or rewarding experiences activate the brain’s “reward” centres, habits can also form. And the more times you perform the activity, the more powerful it gets. According to research, a new behaviour normally takes 66 days or longer to become automatic.

Furthermore, depending on the circumstance, the time it takes for a new habit to take hold can differ significantly.

Form the habit one step at a time.

Be as consistent as possible. Until it becomes automatic, practice the behaviour frequently.
