Johannesburg executive mayor Kabelo Gwamanda compared himself to Democratic Alliance leader (DA) John Steenhuisen when asked about his academic qualifications.

Gwamanda was elected mayor of Johannesburg following a metropolitan municipality special meeting in the City of Joburg Council Chamber on 5 May.

ROUGH DAYS FOR THE NEWLY-ELECTED MAYOR

He beat ActionSA’s Funzi Ngobeni and Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Mpho Phalatse by 139 to 59 and 68 votes respectively.

Gwamanda’s few days as a mayor have not been smooth. He is accused of fraud and his qualifications are in question.

It was reported that his qualifications don’t check out.

‘BLACK STEENHUISEN’

However, he ignored the question and instead compared himself to Steenhuisen.

Steenhuisen doesn’t hold a university degree, according to EWN.

“What if I was a black version of Steenhuisen? Does that disqualify me based on the fact that I’m young and black and I have the capacity to hold such an office? Or is the qualifying criteria influenced or in fact determined by my qualification? I am an indigenous child of the soil.”
