The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange level 9 warning for disruptive rainfall for Overberg, Garden Route and southern parts of the Cape Winelands Districts in the Western Cape.

The warning is valid from Sunday, 24 September to Monday, 25 September.

DISURPTIVE RAINFALL EXPECTED IN GARDEN ROUTE

As previously reported by The South African, a cut-off low pressure system developed along the country’s west coast on Saturday evening, 23 September after the passage of a weak cold front.

The cut-off low system will cause dangerous weather conditions over parts of the country mainly from Sunday. The Eastern Cape and Western Cape will bear the brunt of the extreme weather conditions with the potential for widespread flooding, very rough seas and damaging winds to occur.

Meanwhile, torrential rain in the wild coast and adjacent interior of the Eastern Cape and Overberg, southern Cape Winelands and Garden Route Districts in the Western Cape is expected over the next few days.

“Accumulated 24-hour rainfall may exceed 100mm in some places, leading to widespread flooding of roads, bridges, property (both formal and informal), and danger to life,” the weather service said.

In Overberg 100 – 150mm rain has been predicted.

  • An orange level 6 warning for damaging winds leading to disruption to transport routes, damage to property, and difficult driving conditions can be expected along the coast between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape on Sunday and Monday.
