Weather warning: 80km/h winds and 8m waves in two provinces

Wind is expected to gust up to 80km/h while waves as high as 8m are expected in the Northern Cape and Western Cape

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for wind and waves in the Northern Cape and Western Cape.

The wind warning is valid from Friday, 7 July until Saturday, 8 July while the waves warning is also valid from Friday until Sunday, 9 July.

WARNING ISSUED FOR STRONG WIND AND WAVES IN THE CAPE

The weather service said the passing of the cold front over the Western Cape and Northern Cape is expected to be associated with strong to near gale force north-westerly winds (50 – 70km/h gusting up to 80km/h).

“These winds are expected over eastern Cape Winelands, Central Karoo and the southern interior of Namakwa in the Northern Cape predominantly on Friday moderating on Saturday morning,” the weather service said.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS

  • Localised damage to formal/informal settlements and some structural damage is possible
  • Longer travel times are expected as well as localised problems for high-sided vehicles, especially on the N1
  • Localised fallen trees may affect transport routes, properties and localised power and communication interruptions

WAVE HEIGHTS OF 7.0M EXPECTED IN THE NORTHERN AND WESTERN CAPE

The weather service said south-westerly swells with wave heights of 5.0 and 7.0m can be expected between Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas from Friday spreading to Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay on Saturday morning. (Alprazolam)

The phenomenon is expected to persist into Sunday while subsiding from the north and west by the evening.

“Longer period swells (16-18) are expected from Saturday evening relates to high energy waves possible. Strong north-westerly to westerly winds (50 – 70km/h) between Saldanha Bay and Plettenberg Bay on Saturday will accompany the high wave heights.

The weather condition is expected to contribute to very rough and choppy seas.
