Thunderstorms, rain and strong winds expected in three provinces

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds.

Severe thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rain are expected in three provinces on Thursday, 7 March. 

This is according to a weather alert issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) on Wednesday, 6 March. 

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS, WIND AND HEAVY RAIN FORECAST 

The weather service has forecast severe thunderstorms producing strong winds, heavy downpours and large amounts of small hail. 

The weather phenomena are expected over the central and western parts of Mpumalanga and Gauteng due to the upper perturbation ahead of the upper trough. 

POSSIBLE IMPACTS:

  • Localised damage to formal and informal structures and property. 
  • Localised service disruption due to power surges.
  • Localised flooding of susceptible low-lying roads, low-lying areas and bridges.
  • Falling trees blocking minor roads. 
  • Large amounts of small hail over an open area.
