At this point, the ANC and its members already have so many Gupta links, what’s wrong with adding one more? That sarcastic attitude must have been felt by many South Africans as ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize made submissions to Parliament

Zweli Mkhize on the ANC and Guptas

Mkhizwe made his submissions to the ad hoc committee looking into the funding of political parties, he then confirmed that the ANC had received funding from the Gupta family.

Interestingly enough, Mkhize also claimed that the Guptas had also funded other parties, including the DA.

Mkhize then revealed that new legislation like the Financial Intelligence Centre Amendment Act (Fica) means that political parties’ investment vehicles could in a way, be seen as “compromised”.

“There is something called politically exposed persons. Now that issue tends to affect anyone that has got any kind of a degree of association with political party leadership. It will obviously compromise anything that we try to do on the side of investments … it does not matter which party, somewhere down the line, it will become an issue.”

“Fica will identify as very risky some of the investments associated with party-political prominence. They will obviously try and sequestrate such investments. It does not matter which party they would have come from, so I think we need to look at it,” said Mkhize.

ANC and the billions lost to State Capture

Mkhize concluded by saying that political parties needed to stay away from direct shareholding in investment vehicles. This is a noteworthy stance from Mkhize, especially when you consider that the ANC has its own investment arm, which has allegedly benefited billions from state contracts.
