Ways to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day in the UK

This Saturday 18 July is Madiba’s birthday and the one day we are all encouraged to give back to our communities by spending 67 minutes (or more) doing something good for others.

Mandela Day has a simple message: every person has the ability to make the world a better place.

The day encourages us not only to celebrate the life and legacy of this global icon but also to honour him by ‘paying it forward’ as he called for us to all help address the world’s social injustices when he said ‘it is in your hands now’.

Here are just 4 ways you can get involved if you’re in the UK:

1. The South African High Commission are hosting a concert with well known South African band Mi Casa and artist Toya Delazy on Friday 17th July 2015 from 6pm. All proceeds will go to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund UK. Purchase tickets in advance by clicking here.

2. On Saturday 18 July 2015 the Democratic Alliance Abroad are fundraising for Starfish Greathearts Foundation with a hog roast, music by Babalas and Casey-Leigh at GJ’s pub near Southside Shopping Centre in Wandsworth. Have a look at their Facebook events page for more details or click here to purchase tickets for just £5 each.

3. The SA UK Diaspora are gathering for celebrations with a braai and sporting activities from 11h00 to 19h00 at Peter Symonds College, Owens Road, Winchester, SO22 6RX. As part of giving back to the local community, they’ve teamed up with Winchester council and welcome volunteers to join them at a local homeless shelter between 09h00 to 12h00. If you would like to volunteer your time please contact Mickey on 079 4387 6988 or Zoleka on 079 3997 4028

Please bring your own drink and picnic chairs/mat. Football fans can support our SA boys Amajita competing for a Mandela Cup against Winchester Stoneham under 16.  If you run a small business and would like a stall the cost is £5, please speak to Mickey or Zoleka.

ACTSA Scotland are also looking for volunteers to help pack books into a container on Sat 18th July. They’ve been collecting and sorting chidren’s books for school libraries in Eastern Cape since 1995, and has sent some 450,000 in nine containers so far. This container will be our tenth, and bring the total sent from Scotland to half a million. More books are still welcome.Volunteers are required to be at Hillhead Library on the Byres Road in Glasgow at 10am on Sat 18th July. The books are being collected by STUC (Scottish Trades Union Congress).

There will then be a formal send off for the container in George Square at 2pm and a reception, which includes South African music and refreshments, will take place in the City Chambers and all volunteers are welcome to attend.
