The trial of the five men charged with the murder of Senzo Meyiwa will continue at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, proceedings adjourned early as the defence complained that their clients were being prejudiced after the State introduced witness Lieutenant Colonel Gideon Gouws, who took over from data analyst Colonel Lambertus Steyn when he retired.

During his testimony in July 2023, Steyn told the court about links between singer and Meyiwa’s then girlfriend Kelly Khumalo and the accused in the matter.

Meyiwa was shot and killed at Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus on 26 October 2014 in her presence.

Steyn said cellphone records revealed that Khumalo was in contact with accused 1 Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and accused 5 Fisokuhle Ntuli before and after Meyiwa died.

Furthermore, he also revealed that a SIM swap was done on Meyiwa’s phone just hours after he died.

The court also heard that the defence will only cross-examine ballistics expert Lieutenant Colonel Christian Mangena on 20 May. This is to allow the legal representatives time to secure funding for their own ballistics expert.

Following Mangena’s testimony in August 2023, the defence indicated that it would consult its own ballistics expert in an attempt o rebut Mangena’s evidence about the alleged murder weapon.

Mangena had testified that the firearm used to kill Meyiwa was in the possession of accused 3 Mthobisi Mncube when he was arrested in Malvern in 2015.
