What is the funding used for?

University endowment funds provide crucial financial support for higher education institutions. They sustain the institutions’ core missions: teaching, research, and public service.

Types of endowments

  • Term endowments often require the principal to be spent only after a specific period or event.
  • Unrestricted endowments allow the receiving institution to use, save, invest, and distribute the assets as they see fit.
  • Quasi-endowments are donations intended for a specific purpose. Typically, the principal remains intact, while earnings follow the donor’s instructions.
  • Restricted endowments maintain the principal indefinitely, with earnings spent according to the donor’s wishes.
