Johannesburg:Top 10 HIJACKING HOTSPOTS

The recently released first quarter crime statistics by Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed that 5 866 cars were hijacked across the country between April and June 2023. 450 of which were stolen from the top 10 hijacking hotspots in Johannesburg.

Johannesburg’s hijacking hotspots accounts for 7,6% of the national figure. The metro also accounts for 11 of the country’s Top 30 hijacking hotspots with Lenasia South the 11th most dangerous place for a motorist with 39 hijackings.

AREAS TO AVOID AS A MOTORIST

Protea police station in Soweto recorded a sharp rise in hijackings in the area if compared to the same three month period last year. The area in Soweto township tops the list as a hijacking hotspot in Johannesburg with 64 cars taken compared to 34 last year- a 88,2% increase.

Moroka, also in Soweto, comes in second place despite a 14,3% decline in carjacking. 60 vehicles were taken between April and June, down from 70 last year.

Trendy and popular residential area for young professionals Midrand comes in at 3rd.

The suburb in the north of Johannesburg is also where Home Affairs Deputy Minister Njabulo Nzuza was hijacked of his Range Rover back in 2020. He was accosted by two gunmen at around 16:25 outside a shopping center and was driven around to different ATM’s to withdraw money.
