The City of Cape Town’s traffic service has had 129 taxis impounded in just the last week. With the festive season almost in full swing, the roads are getting more and more dangerous. And according to the City, its officers will enforce the law on taxis. Even if it means their own staff come under attack.

Traffic officials were carrying out safety operations in Brackenfell last Friday. On the day, 12 taxi owners were arrested for intimidation and assault. Four traffic officers were injured as a result. Two patrol vehicles were also damaged. 11 taxis were impounded and one handgun was also confiscated.

The City’s team clearly had some extra motivation going into this week. Operations continued in the Brackenfell area. As a result, more than 3 900 fines were issued. Smith says that amounts to nearly R3.6 million.

“Earlier this week I indicated that staff would not be deterred from enforcing the law, and these outcomes confirm that they’ve held their ground.”

Bust and seize: The December motto

Those taxis being impounded and fines were not the only things getting done in Brackenfell. Smith says 23 suspects were arrested for outstanding warrants too.

Law enforcement agencies around the country are all trying to shine this December. Our Interpol unit in Pretoria arrested a Portuguese fugitive this weekend. He has been on the run from his homeland after being found guilty of multi-million dollar fraud.
