We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Sunday, 7 August.

Yay! The Springboks have beaten the All Blacks in the opening match of the 2022 Rugby Championship at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday, 6 August 2022.

In other news, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has set its sights on the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape, where there are allegations of maladministration. It will also look into whether the awarding of tenders at the institution was above board.

The attacks on Intercape buses are nothing new, as they date back to 2019, with more attacks happening since then. But the bus company has opened 126 cases with the police, with none of them being attended to.

Stellenbosch University’s Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC) found a male student accused of raping a fellow student guilty of sexual misconduct and expelled him on 4 August.

A foul odour led to the discovery of a decomposing body of a female traditional healer who was last seen a month ago in her home in Waterloo, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), on Friday.

Stellenbosch expels male student over alleged on-campus rape

Stellenbosch University’s Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC) found a male student accused of raping a fellow student guilty of sexual misconduct and expelled him on 4 August.  

The alleged rape was reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Wednesday, 18 May. As previously reported, SAPS spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk told The South African a 19-year-old woman was raped at approximately 22:30 on 17 May at a residence in Victoria Street, Stellenbosch.

The victim also reported the matter to the university’s Equality Unit, which referred it to Student Discipline for investigation and kicked off the process that eventually led to the alleged perpetrator’s expulsion on Thursday.

SIU to investigate alleged honours degree fraud and tenders at Fort Hare

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has set its sights on the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape where there are allegations of maladministration. It will also look into whether the awarding of tenders at the institution were above board.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago issued a statement on Friday, 5 August, that said the Unit will investigate allegations of maladministration in the awarding of Honours degrees, mismanagement of funds and sourcing of public servants for study for personal gain at Fort Hare.

The SIU will also be probing four tenders, including contracts for cleaning and gardening services, the leasing of student accommodation, and the appointment of the service provider responsible for the maintenance and repair of air conditioning systems

Foul odour leads to discovery of decomposing body of traditional healer

A foul odour led to the discovery of a decomposing body of a female traditional healer who last seen a month ago in her home, in Waterloo, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Friday. 

According to private security, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), they received a call for assistance at 13:37 after a relative forcefully gained entry into the house and made the discovery. 

On arrival, RUSA members were led to a bedroom that was also used as a prayer room.

Using Intercape buses? Watch out for these VIOLENT ATTACKS

The attacks on Intercape buses are nothing new, as they date back to 2019 with more attacks happening since then.

But the bus company has opened 126 cases with the police, with none of them being attended to.

A breakdown of the attacks was laid out by Intercape CEO Johann Ferreira on Friday. Speaking at the sitting of the Western Cape Standing Committee on Transport and Public Works, he pleaded for authorities to step in and protect the company and the long-distance bus industry.
