We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Friday, 11 August 2023.

SANTACO announced on Thursday evening that the taxi strike is called off with immediate effect.

In other news, City of Cape Town MMC JP Smith, has been caught out contradicting himself as he has repeatedly held that the taxi’s impounded by the City of Cape Town were confiscated in line with the National Land Transport Act and not City by-laws.

Television host and comedian Tumi ‘Stopnonsons’ Matila confronts accusations of assaulting his girlfriend and aiming a firearm right after Women’s Day.

Meanwhile, police have made a breakthrough after Marolien Schmidt was stabbed to death in her home in Gqeberha on Women’s Day.

Lastly, a member of the infamous Afrikaner right-wing group, Boeremag, has been arrested in Pretoria. The suspect will appear before the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

BREAKING: Taxi strike called off with immediate effect

The violent taxi strike will continue on TODAY until a moratorium on impounding taxis is instituted.

The SA National Taxi Council (SANTACO)

The SA National Council (SANTACO) announced on Thursday evening that the taxi strike was called off with immediate effect.

Santaco’s Mandla Hermanus said he is pleased to announce that as part of the resolution reached between the Taxi Industry and the Government.

Taxi Strike: MMC JP Smith contradicts himself

City of Cape Town MMC JP Smith, has been caught out contradicting himself as he has repeatedly held that the taxi’s impounded by the City of Cape Town were confiscated in line with the National Land Transport Act and not City by-laws.

However in a statement on his Facebook page on the 22 July and 23 July, he announced that the City has started impounding vehicles with the new traffic by-laws. and as a response to an aggrieved citizen over the impoundment of private vehicles revealed that the City impounds 1000 taxi’s monthly.

Comedian ‘Stopnonsons’ Matila faces charges of assault against girlfriend

Television host and comedian Tumi ‘Stopnonsons’ Matila confronts accusations of assaulting his girlfriend and aiming a firearm, right after Women’s Day.

According to Briefly, the comedian spent the night in custody at Honeydew police station, preceding his court appearance.

Breakthrough in the BRUTAL murder case of Gqeberha physical therapist

Police have made a breakthrough in the brutal murder case of physiotherapist, Marolien Schmidt. She was stabbed to death in her home in Gqeberha on Women’s Day.

According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg a 29 year-old man was arrested in central and is being detained for the murder that happened in Richmond Hill.

Boeremag member arrested for rape

A member of the infamous Afrikaner right-wing group, Boeremag, has been arrested in Pretoria. The suspect will appear before the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

According to Jacaranda FM, the suspect is a 46 year old parolee, and is now facing charges of on charges of rape and sexual grooming.
