Casual workers have disrupted Pikitup services in the City of Johannesburg, demanding permanent jobs after their contracts expired.

These protests affect waste management operations in areas such as Norwood, Marlboro, Waterval, Selby, Randburg, Midrand, and Diepsloot.

Protests escalate, blocking Pikitup depots

Yesterday, the casual workers, joined by local community members, gathered outside the gates of several Pikitup depots, preventing regular employees from performing their duties. Some protestors escalated their actions by burning tires outside the depots, creating further tension and disruption.

The workers informed Eyewitness News that despite their nearly decade-long tenure with the company, they were passed over for permanent job opportunities.

In response, Pikitup Management is actively seeking solutions to restore normal service delivery.
“Pikitup Management is actively exploring various options to normalize the situation and restore service delivery in the affected depot areas,” said Pikitup.

Furthermore, they are engaging with the protesting workers to reach an amicable resolution and have also implemented security measures to allow employees to exit the depots safely and resume waste collection services.

Additionally, Pikitup is developing a recovery plan to address the waste collection backlogs caused by the protests.

“A recovery plan is also being devised to ensure that the waste collection backlogs that will be occasioned by the present situation are addressed speedily.”

Moreover, this plan aims to expedite the cleanup process once normal operations resume, minimising the impact on residents.

Company apologises for disruptions, urges residents to stay informed

Pikitup has issued an apology for the inconvenience caused by the service disruptions and reassured residents that they are working diligently to resolve the issue. They urge residents in the affected areas to stay informed by checking Pikitup’s social media platforms for updates on waste collection services and the status of the protests.

As the situation evolves, Pikitup remains committed to finding a resolution that will restore services to the affected communities promptly. They continue to negotiate with the casual workers and explore all options to ensure that waste management operations return to normal as soon as possible.
