South Africa ready for the first day of BRICS summit

Members of the BRICS economic group of significant rising economies will gather in for a BRICS summit, starting today.

Leaders of the BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—are set to talk about the block’s potential growth as well as the requirements for new members.

South Africans have voiced their support for the block’s extension despite Brazil’s reservations.

The start date of the BRICS summit

The summit will formally begin today on 21 August and run until August 24. The Sandton Convention Center and Midrand have increased security, and the surrounding roads are closed.

Drivers have been urged to exercise caution, and there is zero tolerance for any criminal activity.

“The desire to join the block has been expressed by more than 20 nations worldwide.
South Africa is in favor of the membership growth. Beyond the interests of its existing members, BRICS has importance. In order for its initiatives to be successful, BRICS must form alliances with other nations that share its goals and viewpoints. By enlarging BRICS, more countries with various political structures and a shared desire for a more stable international order will be represented,” said Ramaphosa

Ramaphosa reaffirmed the nation’s position on nonalignment.

The attendees

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who arrived yesterday, Chinese President Xi Jinping, who arrioned his fourth state visit to the nation, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will all be present at the summit.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will be the president of Russia’s delegation.

In the meantime, Police Minister Bheki Cele spoke to the security personnel on hand for today’ summit. He exhorted the officers to serve, guard, and uphold law and order.
