Shireen Essop, who was kidnapped on 23 May, has been found alive. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that Essop was found at around 2:00 by members of the Klipfontein Neighbourhood Watch and Klipfontein Mission Station.

SAPS will be investigating Essop’s disappearance

Western Cape MEC for Community Safety Reagan Allen says the SAPS are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Essop’s disappearance.

Reagan made a special note about the neighbourhood watch that was actively involved in locating Essop. The MEC said they would urgently be contacting the neighbourhood watch to be formally recognised by registering with the department, reports EWN.

“Having a neighbourhood watch actively involved in this manner is what is meant by an all of society approach. I’ve been informed that the neighbourhood watch is not registered with the department and we will be urgently contacting them to be formally recognised and to start that process. We can achieve so much more if we are all involved in combatting crime,”

said Reagan.

Do NOT wait 24 hours to report a missing person – MCSA

It was also reported that between 60 and 90 missing people cases are recorded per month by Missing Children South Africa (MCSA). The organisation’s statement follows news of a two-month-old baby who was taken from her pram at a retail store. The incident occurred in Bishop Lavis, Cape Town.

Bianca Van Aswegan from Missing Children South Africa shared that people should report a missing person case as soon as possible. Van Aswegan explained that within 48-hours, there is a possibility that a person can be human trafficked to another country.

She went on to explain that there is no need to wait for 24 hours to report a case. The faster a case is reported, the faster action can be taken. This is especially true in cases of missing children, she added. Read the full story here.
