Witness refutes claims Meyiwa wanted to pay lobola for Kelly
Zandie Khumalo had claimed that Senzo Meyiwa wanted to pay lobola for her sister Kelly around the time of his death.

State witness and slain Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa’s friend Mthokozisi Thwala has disputed claims that Meyiwa wanted to pay lobola for his then-girlfriend and singer Kelly Khumalo.
Thwala who was present when Meyiwa was killed in Vosloorus on 26 October 2014 revealed this as he took the stand in the ongoing trial at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
MEYIWA WASN’T GOING TO PAY LOBOLA FOR KELLY KHUMALO
Five men are on trial for the murder of the soccer star, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli. They face charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition. All the five men pleaded not guilty.
On Friday, 4 August the defence finished cross-examining Thwala who was on the stand for the second time as the trial has started from scratch under presiding Judge Ratha Mokgoathleng.
Thwala told the court how he ran out of the house to “seek help” from the neighbours and how they rushed Meyiwa to Botshelong Hospital saying he could feel that he was dying or was already dead by the time they got to the hospital. He also told the court about events that followed after the incident.

During cross-examination by legal representative for accused 5, Advocate Zandile Mshololo about the nature of Kelly and Senzo’s relationship especially around the time of his death Thwala said he will not go into details but what’s important is that the soccer star and the song bird were in love.
Mshololo further asked if it’s true that Meyiwa wanted to pay lobola for Kelly as State witness Tumelo Madlala claimed when he previously testified. Thwala laughed off the claim and said he has never heard of such.
“There is no way Senzo would have taken a second wife without asking for consent from Mandisa,” he said.
Mandisa Mkhize was Meyiwa’s customary wife at the time of his death.
In an interview with eNCA in July 2022, Zandie Khumalo claimed that Meyiwa’s friends visited her mother’s home to prepare for her sister’s lobola negotiations.
“We know Mthoko, we had seen him every now and then. But Tumelo we had met for the first time that day because he was there to discuss the upcoming lobola negotiations for Kelly and would be one of Senzo’s representatives in the discussions,” she said.
A new witness is expected to take the stand when proceedings resume on Monday, 7 August.
