JUST IN: Senzo Meyiwa murder trial postponed to October

The murder trial of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has been postponed to 2 October 2023, here’s why..

The trial of the five men accused of killing former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa has been postponed to 2 October 2023.

The trial which has been marred by delays and postponements was scheduled to sit until Friday, 15 September under the new Presiding Judge Ratha Mokgatlheng.

SENZO MEYIWA MURDER TRIAL

On Wednesday, 13 September, defence counsel for accused 3, Advocate Charles Mnisi requested the master copy of photos downloaded from his client’s phone.

On Thursday, 14 September proceedings were delayed as all the counsels and the judge had a discussion in the chambers. Upon commencement, State Prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi confirmed that the defence has been furnished with the photos.

The defence then asked for a postponement in order to consult with their clients about the 784 photos downloaded from Mncube’s phone.

Constable Sizwe Zungu who is the first witness to directly implicate all the accused for the murder of Meyiwa is expected to be on the witness box for cross-examination when the trial resumes.

As previously reported by The South African, Meyiwa was shot at the home of his then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus.

His close friends Mthokozisi Thwala, Tumelo Madlala, Kelly Khumalo, her mother Ntombi Gladness Khumalo, her sister Zandile Khumalo and her then-boyfriend Longwe Twala as well as Kelly’s two children Christian and Thingo were present when the goal keeper was shot on 26 October 2014.

Five men are on trial at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria for the murder of the soccer star, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli. They face charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition. All five men pleaded not guilty as the trial has started afresh under Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng.
