Senekal protest: First arrest made, as farmer facing ‘multiple charges’

The dust has, for the time being, settled in Senekal – and the police have made an arrest linked to violent protests witnessed outside the courthouse.

Authorities in Senekal, Free State confirmed that they have made an arrest in connection with the violence that erupted outside a local courthouse on Tuesday. Brigadier Motantsi Makhele revealed that they’ve apprehended a suspect, who is facing ‘multiple criminal charges’. It’s understood the male in custody is a local farmer.

The court in Senekal suffered significant damage to property, and a police van was overturned and torched when two suspects in a farm murder case appeared in the dock. The angry mob managed to storm into the holding cells, demanding that they should be allowed to exact their own brand of rough justice on the pair behind bars.

The killers of Brendin Horner displayed extreme cruelty, torturing their victim before tying his body to a pole. The shocking nature of the crime prompted a fierce response this week, and those frustrations exploded in this small Free State town.

  • The suspect is from Senekal, but plies his trade in Marquad.
  • He will be facing two criminal charges in total: Malicious damage to property, and public violence.

Farmer arrested for ‘public violence’ on Wednesday

Both Ronald Lamola and Bheki Cele, two ministers who serve the law, issued statements on the disgraceful scenes witnessed yesterday. Both Cabinet members had called for arrests, and EFF leader Julius Malema was also stirring the pot. Juju had questioned why no-one had been apprehended on Tuesday, sparking a debate on race and policing in SA.

However, one of the unruly protesters has now been brought to book.
