Winter looks set to finish with a flourish. Multiple SA weather sources are predicting that there will be snowfall on Saturday night, as a bitter cold front sweeps inland.

SA weather: Where will the snow fall on Saturday 25 August?

Both Snow Report SA (SRSA) and Ventusky are currently forecasting flurries in both the Northern and Western Capes, with temperatures set to plummet on the weekend.

There has been substantial snowfall throughout this winter, which has seen mountainous resorts such as Matroosberg and the peaks of the Eastern Cape transformed into picturesque alpine landscapes.

SRSA have issued an advanced forecast for Saturday. They’ve confirmed that freezing conditions could reach areas as low as 1000m above sea-level.

“Our initial analysis suggests that the front will make landfall during Saturday 25th August, with snow possible over all the southwesterly mountain ranges by Saturday evening. It looks like the snowfalls will continue through Saturday night and into Sunday morning while the front moves east.”

“It also looks like some areas in the Northern Cape will get snow during Saturday night. The freezing levels are also looking like they will be extremely low (down to 1000m) which indicates that the conditions will be conducive to low-level snow in some of the Western Cape regions.”

“The way things look right now, Table Mountain could even get some snow!”

How much snowfall is forecast for the weekend?

Despite their early projections, SRSA still remains cautious. They haven’t yet published their forecast map for the snowfall as of 14:30 on Wednesday. However, the Ventusky forecast supports their predictions:

It looks like the Ceres mountains will get more than just a capping of snow. The channel between Paarl and Worcester is on course for a substantial amount of the white stuff, pushing the 5cm mark. The Matroosberg resort will also be in the eye of this particular weather system

In the Northern Cape, the usual cold-spots of Calvinia and Sutherland are set to receive a light dusting, too.  In both regions, temperatures will be dropping below zero according to the advanced forecast.
